I began to notice a sound that accompanied just about every other exercise we did. We&rsquo;ve all heard ourselves making these sounds... Awe (sigh)... Oh no (sigh&hellip; Oh man not that exercise!)<br /><br />Many times it is a bit of a battle to get ourselves to do the things we know will make our days and lives more vital and energized especially when it comes to working with our own bodies. Imagine an instance where it is completely essential to have not only encouraging but supercharged excitement about something we are about to do. &nbsp;</span><br /><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">I have a very vivid picture in my mind that helps.</span><br /><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">Remember the trailer for movie Brave Heart?</span><br /><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">I&rsquo;ve never actually seen the movie, but I specifically remember the commercial for it. All of the fierce painted faced warriors on the ridge the moment before going in to battle, one they know is going to be the battle of their lives.</span><br /><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">I see Mel Gibson standing in front of them, rallying them up</span><br /><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">Are you ready??? Let&rsquo;s do this thing!!! Come on!!!!!! Yeah!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!</span><br /><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">Now imagine a few of these warriors on the ridge not really tuning in to Mel, but instead speaking amongst themselves. &ldquo;Awe (sigh)... these aren&rsquo;t my best fighting tools.&rdquo;&hellip; &rdquo;Oh man ... I left my good club at home.&rdquo; ... &ldquo;Oh no (sigh)... my shield has this funny crack in it&rdquo; ... &ldquo;I really didn&rsquo;t get enough sleep last night, I wonder when this battle will be over&rdquo;</span><br /><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">How are these warriors going to do in their battle???</span><br /><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">Not very good at all!</span><br /><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">This example makes it seem ridiculously obvious that these thoughts are not going to be helpful at all.</span><br /><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">At the same time, we do it to ourselves time after time after time.</span><br /><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">And it keeps us from getting to the goals that are so important for our health and wellbeing.&nbsp; Remember, awareness is the key, so lets catch ourselves when we do the complaining sounds and the excuses and choose a battle cry instead! The mind can only think one thought at a time so let&rsquo;s make it a positive one. That said, here are a few things you can do to minimize your risk:</span><br /><span>1.&nbsp;</span><span>Eat organic as often as possible. Wash all produce thoroughly. Sure, I can&rsquo;t protect them from everything, and they are going to come into contact with their fair share of toxins in the world. Here's the story:<br /><br />A teacher in New York was teaching her class about bullying and gave them the following exercise to perform. She had the children take a piece of paper and told them to crumple it up, stamp on it and really mess it up but do not rip it. Then she had them unfold the paper, smooth it out and look at how scarred and dirty is was. She then told them to tell it they&rsquo;re sorry. Now even though they said they were sorry and tried to fix the paper, she pointed out all the scars they left behind. And that those scars will never go away no matter how hard they tried to fix it. That is what happens when a child bully&rsquo;s another child, they may say they&rsquo;re sorry but the scars are there forever. The looks on the faces of the children in the classroom told her the message hit home. Pass it on or better yet, if you're a parent or a teacher, do it with your child/children.</span><br /><br /><span style="color:#2d2d2d">The thought of maintaining a strong focus on mindful speech as adults came to mind as I read this. It inspired me to suggest a simple experiment. It is hard in times of transition to  realize that these changes are happening ALL THE TIME! Some big changes  can affect you more profoundly including: getting married, having your  first child, having your second child, severe illness in the family,  leaving a job you have been in for a long time, beginning a new job, and  even something as simple as working out a new commuter route when you  have moved to a new area. In these times, it is natural to feel "off  center" having expanded your boundaries it takes a bit of time for the  new reality to settle in. I remember when we had our first baby, Gabriel  at the moment when we were discharged from the hospital Jason and I  looked at each other and paused for a moment. It was time to go home  with our new baby. We paused a bit longer. both thinking "They're going  to just let us take him home?" Wasn't there  some kind of test we should have to take like you would when you get  your driver's license? We were amazed, there was no test. After a while,  we did go home and start to work out how to navigate the joys and  endless puzzles of parenthood. Our job description as parents is always  changing with the stages and phases that our children are going through.  Our little inside joke that most parents can probably appreciate is  that "Once you think you have got the rules of the game all figured out,  the whole game changes".&nbsp; This can sometimes be paralyzing, as you  don't want to ever make the wrong decisions as parents. Even with the  help of many parenting articles and books and newsletters at times we  are still left unsure of what to do and have to have faith that things  will just work out so we can move forward. I have often heard the quote  from John Burroughs that says " Leap and the net will appear" meaning  that i<span style="">f  you make a leap of faith on something that you truly believe in,  something or someone will appear to accept what you are reaching for and  not let you crash to the ground. The universe will conspire to  facilitate you reaching your true goal. As often as I remind myself of  this, I have many times held fast to the words of Thomas Jefferson that  say "When you reach the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on".</span><br /><span style=""></span><span style="text-decoration:none; font-style:normal; font-weight:400; color:rgb(136, 136, 136); "><span style="text-decoration:none; font-style:normal; font-weight:400; color:rgb(136, 136, 136); "></span></span></span></span></span></div> <hr style="width:100%;clear:both;visibility:hidden;"></hr>  <div class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><span style='text-decoration:none; font-style:normal; font-weight:400; color:rgb(136, 136, 136); '><span style=""><span style=""><span style=""><span style=""><span style=""><span style=""><span style=""><span style=""><span style=""><span style=""><span style=""><span style=""><span style=""><span style=""><span style=""><span style=""><span style=""><span style=""><span style=""><strong style="">Open Hearts and Minds</strong><br /><span style=""></span><br /><span style=""></span>  I  am so grateful to be able to witness change in such a profound way  as I  do in the growth and change I see in my kids. Just this morning,   Gabriel stood at our &ldquo;growth chart wall&rdquo; and pointed out that he is   already taller than where we marked the wall in the beginning of   February! Both Mikaela and Gabriel love it when we put the mark on the   wall to see how much they&rsquo;ve grown. When Gabriel was only a baby I would   delight in the notable changes that would happen when he went through a   growth spurt. First I would notice an insatiable hunger. It was the   type of signal that said &ldquo;Fuel, Fuel, give me more fuel, I&rsquo;m spending a   lot of energy growing!&rdquo; Then I would see a visible change in the length   of his torso and finally his legs would catch up, at least that was my   perception of it. Going through this process taught me not to question   the ques of my child. It kept me open to observing what was happening   with my kids in the moment and doing my best to listen to their needs.   Sometimes they really do need to eat more! Knowing that we work really   hard to feed our kids healthy foods, made it really clear that it was   truly fuel he was needing and not a sugar fix. I remind myself to be gentle and mindful and to treat myself   with care. My boy had gone to the same preschool just a year earlier. Did  they not like us? Was there something we had done? Maybe not turned in  some paperwork in a timely<br /> Manner? I didn&rsquo;t know what to think, so I decided to heed my teacher&rsquo;s  advice and remind myself&hellip; &ldquo;What they think of me is none of my business&rdquo;  and go about my business. No worries&hellip; All is good until we are informed  otherwise.<br /> The meeting went on. All the questions were asked and answered and besides a slight schedule shift, all seemed well.<br /> Then&hellip; We got the announcement:<br /> &ldquo;All parents of the three year old afternoon class please meet with the coordinators for a special meeting in the office.&rdquo;<br /> The bomb is dropped.<br /> They let us know that so many people dropped out of our class that there  are only four children left. The decision has to be made as to weather  or not to try to make a go of it with a small class or to find a plan B  for our kids.<br /> No wonder there was an uncomfortable moment at the greeting. There is an  uncomfortable feeling that goes with uncertainty about what is going to  happen next. This is especially true when there is a change taking  place, and people may be disgruntled.<br /> We are still in limbo as to what will happen with our three year olds. I  am hopeful and open to the possibility that they will be able to work  something out. Now tomorrow to figure out how to explain to my big girl,  all of three and a half years old, after preparing for days for her  first big day of school, there has been a change of plans.
